What Dr. Darrach has created is based on his 10+ years of continuing education in rehabilitation. The movement therapy that he has created is very individualized and based off of movement assessments and screens in order to optimize therapy to the correct location and apply specific movement and exercises based on the assessment, screen and patients ability to perform exercises. This therapy is ideal for people with Cerebral Palsy, chronic pain, general stiffness, wanting better body awareness, improved sports performance and better overall movement function.
What is involved in the therapy is a movement screen, based mostly on the Selective Functional Movement Assessment/Functional Movement Screen and a Developmental Kinesiological outlook. From this assessment it points not only to painful areas, but also areas of dysfunction that can be overlooked yet can cause you to compensate and overload another area with is the painful site. After the assessment therapies will be chosen that best suit that situation, whether that be manual soft tissue therapy to an area(s), manipulation, mobilization or stabilization exercises. Exercises will always be given to reinforce better joint positioning and muscle use.
Dr. Darrach feels that if you cannot breathe properly, you cannot stabilize yourself. You will always sacrifice stability in your spine and elsewhere in order to breathe. Think about it this way, your body does not truly care about your arms, legs and spine, if cares about breathing. If you don't breathe you cannot survive. With this idea our body has developed many strategies in order to get a breath into our bodies but it sacrifices our ability to move and stabilize correctly. A lot of Dr. Darrach's therapy is related to correct breathing in order to properly use muscles to stabilize correctly and stop compensating with muscles that are not designed to work that way all the time. If you give them a break from being overused in a simple task such as breathing, they are better able to stabilize your spine and extremities, allowing better overall movement.
The exercise therapy is based on Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) progressing to full functional movements used in everyday life or can be tailored to fit into a weightlifting routine, golf regimen, hockey, baseball or any other sport. DNS is based off of developmental kinesiology, an innovative look at the human body and movement based off of optimal infant development (babies don't need to be told how to move!). With the DNS approach, we can use the developmental positions to get better joint positioning, proper breathing patterns and better "core' activation in order to better move with less resistance from the nervous system. From these proper positions Dr. Darrach can help you achieve a more ideal body position with helps to decrease stress put on the joints and muscles that lead to dysfunction and ultimately less pain.
Dr. Darrach also offers weightlifting technique classes for kids/young adults, adults and elderly. You will learn better positioning in order to help prevent overload and injury. Individual and group classes are offered as well as team assessments and lifting classes.
