What is Chiropractic?
As one of the largest health care professions in Ontario, chiropractic medicine is an evidence informed, natural, hands-on, non-invasive whole body approach to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to help promote total health, alleviate pain and improve quality of life.
As chiropractors, the focus is directed toward optimizing spinal and extremity joints movements while allowing the nervous system proper input and less irritation. Chiropractors are trained to perform a comprehensive physical examination, provide a diagnosis, and perform hands on treatments of musculoskeletal and nervous system problems. The comprehensive treatments can include hands on spinal manipulative therapy, therapeutic exercises, manual muscle therapy, nutritional and lifestyle counselling.
One of the most common therapies a chiropractor uses is spinal manipulative therapy, which can comprise a variety of adjustment techniques. Specific training in spinal manipulation allows chiropractors to provide highly-skilled adjustments to the vertebrae of the spine and extremities, correcting joint motion to restore proper movement and improve function.
For many conditions, such as low back pain, chiropractic care is the primary method of treatment. When a multi-disciplinary approach is advisable, a chiropractor will coordinate care with other health care professionals. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical or other treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.
For optimal health and quality of life, a chiropractor should be part of every Canadian's healthcare team.
